The Biggest Design Problem

For me, the biggest, most personal, and most gratifying design problem that of the home. Why is this? The ornate nature of decoration and matching of physical objects is self-expression through surrounding contexts - contexts that are interacted with daily and constantly feeding back to whether or not that chair was a bad purchase.

And god knows what kind of insane things your brain must be doing when trying to figure out it all. People are such interesting creatures.

Tuesday Idea: Tufted Feel-Good Headboards

Kinda obsessed with them. It's almost like I want everything tufted now. I should design a tufted iPhone case. That'd probably sell a few million.

Maybe I've been listening to too much Kris Kros. Maybe I just like it that way. $38.

Coast to Coast

Great design is one that speaks for itself. And while sometimes feels all lines of trendsetting come from the coastal regions, everything goes down so well that I could just care less who takes credit. As for me, I'm ready to empower the next generation of Internet culture conquistadors, regardless of age, race, or location.

Whiskey Militia Bar Sketch

The idea: Create a bar for whiskey lovers. Decor will be urban country club. Leather seating paired with modern lighting with an inviting dance floor. Reasonably priced drinks. Whiskey-Coke for $9. Beers for $6.

Here comes the best part. Every evening from 3-5PM for happy hour, we'll have this special. We call it the "Ben Hook Deal" (based off this guy genius). Basically, if you order a bottle of your favorite whiskey (and trust us, we'll have lots to choose from), you get access to unlimited beer. The catch? You'll need to have 5 friends with you and all must order at least one (1) regular drink in order to reap the benefits.

There are, of course, some legal issues with this new approach to social drinking, but it's a tempting endeavor that I wish I could experiment with if I only had a few more investors. Must start making investor friends.

My Shelves So Sick

I'm pretty sure my shelving infatuation will one day get the best of me. But for now, enjoy this collection of organized chaos in the modern home. My favorite is probably the last one (since I have pretty much everything to match aside from the creepy hand vases).

Jaguar's Future-Ready C-X75

I've always wanted a car that boasts the clean lines of the 1950's BMWs with the raw power and efficiency of today's supercars. This new concept by Jaguar (which rings up at around $1.15 million) seems to be a match made in heaven. It should be available sometime around 2015. Hopefully by then I would have invaded and conquered a few countries, grown copious amounts of corn, and made a fortune in order to afford this.

Existential Star Wars

The effect of this Sartre/Star Wars mashup will be somewhat ruined if you actually speak French, but for those of us who are just reading the subtitles and hearing serious-sounding gibberish, there's no better way to spend 3-minutes of your Monday morning.

Planned Upgrades

So I have decided that I will be documenting the upgrades I'll be adding to my Denver Victorian over the next couple of months. The list so far: 1) a wall shelving system, 2) a wall-mounted bike rack, and 3) a photo studio.

Something New Every Day

Now that I'm officially graduated with a Masters (yeah, sucka!), I'll have to force myself to learn something new every day to keep those brain cells workin' overtime. Maybe I'll start learning how to make sushi finally. Or how to fix a leaking bike tire.

The Bobi Digital Shelf

It is here. My year-long graduate school thesis.

A bit of background for those just coming in. In the 12 months, I did a series of user research studies on collections in people's homes. My goal was to develop a solution that would directly address the lack of personal investment, tangibility, and value found in digital music today.

What came out of this research were a series of insights. I learned: 1) People valued things allowed them space in their homes, 2) In an Internet-connected culture, creative expression is everything, and 3) You can't simply put a digital photo in a frame and expect it to work; treat digital like digital, but make it rock unlike anything you've ever seen.

Today, as I prep for my move from graduate life back into the working world, I leave you with the spoils of all my hard work, the Bobi Digital Shelf (I really hope some of you hip-hop heads out there got the reference). It's furniture. It's an interface. It's a home to showcase your digital collections.

Please check out the video demo and let me know your thoughts!

Last Day of Slow Change

I'll admit, it's been a long time coming, but today's a moment of change for me. No, this isn't politics-related. It's about life changes. It's about moving to a brand new state I've never truly explored before. It's meeting new groups of people who will eventually leave a wonderfully candid and human mark on me, just as the previous one has. It's full speed ahead. No looking back.

10 Ways To Freshen Up Your Space

If you're like me, you're OCD about getting the space just right. When I'm stuck, I always resort to this quick and easy method of freshening up my space. I do this by:
 1. Moving shit around.
 2. Buying new art.
 3. Painting shit.
 4. Moving more shit around (on the table, furniture).
 5. Bringing in some nature (flowers, etc.).
 6. Mixing bedding sets without giving a shit.
 7. Adding new color via a single item.
 8. Cleaning the living shit out of the place.
 9. Taking/removing the drapes or trying something new with windows.
 10. Adding a mirror to brighten up shit.
