Santiago: Attractions...Bella Vista (where the young bar scene is), Santa Lucia (beautiful park with a small trails, great place for photos overlooking santiago), San Cristobal (huge hiking park, you can take the funicular down which also is also good for photos). There is the Pablo Neruda house which is near Bella Vista. Also, there is a great huge seafood market/restaurant place. I don't remember what the street is called but it's at the end of the street with all the big department stores.
Vina Del Mar and Valpraiso: These two cities are within 1 hour of Santiago. Take the metro to the bus depot. Once you get to either city you can take a small bus to the other one. In Valpraiso, there's great graffiti!! Take a ton of pics. There is also another Pablo N museum there as well. Can get a little dangerous at night. Vina is more of a beach city. Sit on the beach and just drink there or at a restaurant.
Valdivia: This take about a half day to get to. City of beer : )
Like I said there are a ton of small cities that are wonderful it just depends on time and what you want to see. Buses are your best friend.
Try Hostelworld for cheap hostels. Remember these are cheap places so shared bathrooms and gnarly rooms. LOL. But it's all about the experience.
