T'was great seeing all you beautiful people back at home.

I know I did a disappearing act from nearly all my old friends these past 2 years. There's been quite a few happenings, occurances, and misfortunes that I could use to explain myself, but I won't bother. It was awesome to see all the people I caught up with during the last few days, and I wholeheartedly thank you all for being there. Also, to those in Davis - you know who you are - you guys have made life in these barren fields great. Thank you everyone, my hat goes off to all of you.

Don't Rush to Upgrade Your Wi-Fi Router

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is working on baking the latest technology into a new standard, 802.11n. This is where the "N" in Wireless-N comes from. But manufacturers haven't been waiting for the standard to be nailed down, and started putting out "Draft-N" routers and laptop cards last spring.

There is no guarantee that this equipment will be fully compatible with the finished standard, which isn't expected to ratified until 2008. Hence, it would be a bad idea to upgrade until the new standard comes out.

Fuck MSI and everything rebate related.

I've received the opportunity of getting fucked in the ass by this wishy-washy something technology maker. Why? I sent in a $150 mail-in rebate for their stupid "promotion" for a video card and got squat! Their reason? A postmark that came in one day late of their ridiculously short 14-day rebate policy.

Lesson? Say no to mail-in rebates, no to MSI products, and no to Circuit City (they're just fuckers anyway).

Update: I have just filed a report to Better Business Bureau about MSI's business practices. Let's see if this even does anything.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII

I know, I know. The trailer is beautiful... like the trailers for Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, but the movie turned out to be complete crap. Despite this, and along with the fact that I have not completed a Final Fantasy game since VII, I am definitely looking forward to this newest installment.

Windows Vista Home Premium: OS of Choice

After sifting through the confusing number of versions of Vista and doing some extra research here and there, I've found the best version of Vista would be the Home Premium edition.

Although I'm a bit reluctant to throw money down for the very first time in the direction of the Microsoft empire (I'm actually hoping Google takes over), I think it's better than the hours I spend trying to find cracks and downloading possible viruses onto my system.

That won't keep me from pirating everything else though *cough*... hehe.

And so I've decided...

...Not to buy any monitor that's not HDCP compliant.

That includes the current Apple monitors. If you buy one today and connect it to your new Mac Pro, you won't be able to display HD content from a Blu-Ray player Apple may release next year, and don't expect Apple to help you when you complain. This goes the same with PC's that aren't really compatible unless you find homebrewed WinACD drivers floating around the net somewhere.

I would suggest that everyone boycott Apple displays until they add HDCP!

I really don't understand why Apple ever released the newer line of displays without HDCP. It was really stupid.

PS: I also hear Apple doesn't really attempt to repair any buggy monitors, they just replace them. Therefore, you're better off buying Apple Care to extend your crappy 1 year warranty, or else you'll get charged with a full priced monitor when you send it into repair.

Apple Cinema 23" on a PC Desktop - Compatible?

I've always wondered if I could use an Apple Cinema on a normal PC Desktop. Since the power button usually means "shut down" for any Mac plugged into it, does that imply it would load the shut-down screen on a PC? The brightness controls make those cool visuals on screen in that opaque white that everyone loves on a Mac, but what about on a Core 2 Duo PC desktop?

Bored at work one day, we were all curious to if it would really work. After rummaging through the millions of wires, we finally got it plugged into a Dell Optiplex at one of our demos. Here are the running differences and possible annoyances that you may run into if you plan on running an Apple Cinema on a PC:

1) You cannot power off the monitor. As long as it is plugged into its power outlet, it will stay on. I'm not sure if this was because we unplugged the monitor as it was powered-on from the Mac, or if this is just the way it is. We did not have time to further test this option.

This does bring up a particular concern, however, which is bulb life. If it must be turned off manually, or if the PC's power options fails to force the AC to turn off, we have a problem.

2) Brightness controls, as we expected, did not work. It stays at whatever brightness it was before we took it off the Apple PowerMac G5. Thus, if you really did need to adjust the brightness, I wonder if you would have to plug it into a laptop of some sort in order to do the adjustments. Again, a minimal, yet significant nuisance if you're looking to make it your primary monitor.

Onto the plus side of things:

3) We found the USB and Firewire hub worked perfectly and was picked up by Windows XP drivers immediately upon connection. We did not actually plug anything in, but we're sure that it would pick up any USB 2.0 devices if we did plug something in.

4) Seeing XP run on the AC feels like you're running Bootcamp or Parallels. A real good 1337 feeling. We did not have time to test gaming, but the refresh rate seems far better than many LCD's we've put on floor showcase. As for movie performance goes, it looked excellent - no ghosting whatsoever.

There you go for now, if anybody was interested. I know I was!

All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth

Realizing by now, money is not an object - it is an acquaintance, dreadfully close and far, and seeing how Christmas and Thanksgiving Black Friday has such intimate relations with her; I, too, want a piece of the action.

All in all, though, I don't expect anything from anyone. A simple smile is enough to brighten my holiday spirit, along with the ending finale of the biological bombardment of information I've undergone this quarter. Having my two front teeth is also an added bonus.

However, being the male diploid I am, I have an undying desire to buy. Not clothes... well clothes, yes. But more so... technology! I'm awaiting those bastards to lower prices on everything this Christmas holiday season, and with whatever money I've made from the last Summer or this quarter at the UCDavis Bookstore Computer Store shall go into one of the following purchases:

Apple Cinema 23 Aluminum Bezel LCD Monitor
Canon SD700IS 6.0MP w/ 4GB SD Memory

And my continued splurge does not end there! I also want:

Sharp Aquos 32" HDTV LCD Monitor
Yamaha DGX620 88-Key Weighted Graded Hammer Action Digital Piano

And if the tides are right, throw this under my Christmas tree:

A Sweet Lamborghini

All in all, it's always nice to have a list of things you truly want - even with the fact that it would cost a lifetime to get (well the Lamborghini at least).

Nike Savvas: Atomic

Things are slow nowadays, now that school is out. I'm sore from excessive quest searching and raid boss killing. In the next few weeks, I'll be step-by-step modifying my new desktop with low-noise and heat control in mind.

So in the meantime I direct you to
Gravestmor, who gives us this shot of the artist Nike Savvass's piece Atomic: full of love, full of wonder.

Suspended polystyrene balls held in place on nylon wire fill the room in a rough grid, running though the spectrum from reds to blues up the room with a few rogue orange balls escaping their hue, bubbling up into the cooler tones. Occasionally a set of industrial fans blow the whole thing into a jittery field of wobbling uncertainty. Like most things the balls soon reach thier natural frequency and begin bobbing in time, like a matrix of nervous junkies. See more here.

Imminent mass destruction.

I've decide to pull the trigger on my new core 2 duo purchase. No Intel chip has been this hot since the good ol' 2.4C days, so I'm pretty psyched even though I have a 25 page paper due in a couple of days. Still, I've never been this excited since the last time I went to IKEA.

Here are the exact specs of my new system:

Case: Lian Li V Cool PC-V600A
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3
CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E6300
RAM: Patriot 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) 4-4-4-12
Video: MSI Radeon X1900XTX 512MB w/ AC Accelerox2 Cooling
Sound: Creative SB X-Fi XtremeMusic 7.1 Channels Retail
HD1: 150GB WD Raptor 10,000 RPM SATA150
HD2: 320GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA
CD: NEC Silver 16x DVDRW Burner
Floppy: ALPS Silver Internal Floppy Drive
Monitor: Dell 2005FPW 20.1" Wide Aspect Monitor
Speakers: M-Audio LX4 2.1 Expandable Studio Monitors w/ Subwoofer
Keyboard: Logitech UltraX Keyboard
Mouse: Logitech MX700
Extras: Custom Lian Li Bezels, Artic Cooling 120mm Silent Fans, Rubber Grommets, Custom Filter, Wristpad, etc.
I still gotta check the clearance on the Zalman CNPS9500 and Antec TPII 550W power supply. This case is tiny, but somehow fits all these huge things into it. Kind of reminds me of those VW commercials.

But damn, that system added up quick. No new car for me, for a while.

UPDATE: Thanks Chris for the heads up. It seems the distance from the motherboard to the powersupply is a mere 95mm. That means no 9500 will be able to fit in there unless I start sawing away parts of the power supply. Recommendations? I'm thinking of the ZALMAN CNPS7700-Cu whose height clearance is 67mm.

Success in 2006: Flickr & YouTube

Ed Cotton at Influx has a great post on why Youtube & Flickr have had enormous success. They epitomize brands in today's longtail environment that not only embrace community but have higher goals than pure capital. That in turns translates in sales. Sneaky huh? Ed has put together a couple insightful similarities. For the full article check out their site.

From Influx:
1. Do Something Better: Find a way or a better way for people to do something they want to do- in both these cases- it's sharing digital assets

2. Believe in What You Do: It's not about a money making/get rich quick scheme. You believe there's a better way and you are going to work it out. Success is a by-product of doing good.

3. Community is Everything: Listen to your community. This is not a one way conversation- there's on-going dialog relating to "policing", standards and ideas

4. Be Soulful: Even if you sell, like Flickr, don't sell your soul. The honest, no frills approach is right. Interestingly, while many thought the Yahoo purchase would lead to the the demise of Flickr, instead, they turned out to be much more of an influence on Yahoo than could have ever been predicted.

5. Be Authentic: These companies look like they have banned or never even heard of the phrases "brand strategy" and "marketing plan?. The lack of corporate polish adds to the feeling that there are real people behind the idea.

A lot of this reminds me of "young" companies hungry to make their mark and do things their way. Inevitably companies change over time, as capital increases often they lose their aggressiveness and need to innovate. Friendster the first social networking site is a blip compared to Myspace these days, will YouTube be around in 5 years? Read more.

M. Ward on The Late Show with David Letterman

M. Ward is one of those musicians that either attracts you immediately or shows little immediate appeal. If this song, from his latest album Post War, shows little immediate appeal for you then friend, you might need to rethink a few things about what it is you’re listening to.

Farewell, Egghead and Dingbat.

Although this may be a permanent goodbye, I must admit: good times were shared at this place. Your paint chipping, nails petruding, I had initially thought you were a herpes infested farmland with an apartment complex built on top of it. I was wrong, given time, I came to accept your forthcomings. I even held my 21st birthday in your Olympic sized vessel of liquid. Your landlord may have been the dumbest person I have ever had to deal with, but I also accepted her as a person lacking the common traits for a civilized woman.

I praise to you, you rebuilt my entire balcony after Mark tried to throw his life away by swinging around back and forth on it like a boat. You fixed my pathetically designed clothes bar, nearly five times. Your light fixtures dated, but you still continued serving light into the dark corners of our personalized rooms. You loved us, didn't you?

However, I have decided to move on to something new. I have found better things in life. Your Egghead mafia maintenance man no longer entertains me. The "merrr" jokes have gotten dry and repetitive. Your microwaves no longer heat up my soups, air conditioning takes hot hair and reuses it, and carpet has accumulated enough dirt to make my feet dark brown after a few minutes of walking around.

You're old, Almondwood.

And I might not be the first one to say this, but I will be the last. Fuck you and your goddamn showers.

An Open Letter to My Bedbugs.

This is why you never dumpster dive for mattresses. You never know where that shit's been.

"Then came August. I was dealing with being hivey all the time and rashy some of the time and generally very uncomfortable, but I was dealing, you know? And then you showed your faces. Literally. See, I have it figured out now. The grandaddy of all bedbugs came to play, didn't he? He must have been starving because he gave me three bites I just couldn't ignore. I mean, these were nasty, bright red and the size of a penny and really fucking itchy. That's when the lightbulb went on, bitches. There was something FUNKY going on in my bedroom and I was on to you, I just didn't have a clue that you were so stealthy. Really, you are. But I looked you up. God bless the internet. Yep, I Googled your asses and when I typed in "bites while sleeping," there you were. You are some ugly motherfuckers, too. I'm not just saying that because you've been stealing my blood without my knowledge or consent, either. You are really ugly."
Quite an entertaining read. See the complete letter.

Quite possibly the sexiest DS Lite case yet.

Well okay, this might not be the manliest, snaked-skinned badboy you've been looking for, but Leather DS Lite Case by XO approximates the look and feel of the DS Lite remarkably well, all without sacrificing any of the brand's stylish, tech-savvy accessorizing. The 5.5" x 3.54" x 1.34" case fits the device snugly, securing with a velcro flap and housing it in 100% leather, foam padding, and an inner lining that is as smooth as velvet. There's also a strap to secure the case to your wrist. It's scheduled to be available this month--only in white, at the moment--so keep an eye out.

Canon EOS 30D

I've been debating this for a while - whether or not to invest in one of these. I used to take pictures on a daily basis, but nowadays I just sit around and let my S400 rot away in the corner. Poor guy.

I blame the condescending downward push of technological development for my personal "ehhh" towards my perfectly good camera, but I can't seem to convince myself to upgrade. The pictures look absolutely spectacular, though. See for yourself.

The other option would be the sweet looking Canon SD700 IS, now currently dropping in price. Smells like another line is coming around the corner.

WSJ confirms massive Dell battery recall

An estimated 4.1 million Dell notebook computers sold worldwide are being voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer, cooperating with the US Consumer Products Safety Commission, after admitting to having received six reports of notebooks spontaneously catching fire.

Potentially affected batteries were sold with the following models of Dell notebook computers or separately as secondary batteries:

 • Latitude: D410, D500, D505, D510, D520, D600, D610, D620, D800, D810
 • Inspiron: 500M, 510M, 600M, 700M, 710M, 6000, 6400, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9200, 9300, 9400, E1505, E1705
 • Precision: M20, M60, M70, M90
 • XPS: XPS, XPS Gen2, XPS M170, XPS M1710
I know a couple of people who own these notebooks, but unfortunately they will be using them on an airplane sometime in the very near future (Tri, Danny, Karen, etc.). I suppose that isn't the very best of scenarios, but what can you do.

Young people aged 16 to 24 are switching off their tellies and moving online, the telecoms watchdog Ofcom has barked.

In its latest report, Ofcom says that the "networked generation" is driving a radical shift in media consumption.

They are apparently abandoning their tellies, switching off their radios and spurning print magazines in favour of online services, the study says.

Those that remain are looking at broadband and digital TV rather than that old fashioned wireless thingee. Most are using broadband connections for internet telephone calls too.

A spokesOfcom said that 16 to 24 year olds spend nearly three hours on the world wide wibble each week.

More than 70 per cent use some kind of social networking site, such as My Space, and one in five have their own website or blog.

As a result they are watching seven hours less TV per week than the average viewer. More at the Beeb, here.

Just shows why we should just privatize social security.

After taking it upon myself to do something responsible and acknowledgable, I get fucked in the ass.

Over 20% taken from my paycheck. Is that even normal?

Sticker nose-dive into Craigslist and WGA.

Windows Genuine Validation has properly owned me as a leet haxor. I'm completely stumped at getting a crack to properly overwrite a file that is under constant use. My final option would probably be to boot from a floppy disk into MS-DOS and try to manually overwrite it from there, but I don't even have those floppy things laying around anymore. I'll probably have to go to the store and buy a 10-pack for two bucks.

I have a confession: I've been a Craigslist whore lately. Constantly sucker punching anyone that offers a futon for more than $50, asking for $55 when I listed $50, and throwing bargaining chips at people like they're french fries. I can't believe some people though - they try and sell me an outdated projection TV for $1500. I mean, c'mon! I don't care if it's 62" and that you paid $3300 for it like less than 6 months ago; here's my $500, take it or leave it! Ah, but it sure does work wonders when a good deal comes along.

UPDATE: Found this site with a bunch of other bright ideas, might give that a run through. For reference if anyone has this problem running a pirated version of Windows. Looks like option #3 works the best for most people. I shall download the hacks and give you my success story in a few days.

Negative Calorie Drinks and Foods

Despite being somewhat of a health nut, I somehow missed out on the studies surrounding the negative calorie diet.

Don’t let the name fool you, the contents of the food aren’t created of something like antimatter, which annihilate calories. Rather, they are filled with relatively less calories than it takes to consume them.

For instance, you eat a vegetable such as broccoli that contains 25 or so calories and your body naturally must expend about 80 calories in order to digest it. Simple math shows that more energy is used than received.

Apparently there is a new softdrink on the market called Celsius. Its creators claim that it not only fits this “negative calorie” paradigm, but that it also comes in three tasty flavors: cola, lemon & lime, and ginger ale.

Other foods that are considered to have “negative calories”:

Asparagus, Beets, Cabbage (green), Cauliflower, Clams, Celery root, Chile peppers, Cucumber, Dandelion, Carrots, Endive, Garden cress, Garlic, Papaya, Radishes, Spinach, Turnip, Zucchini, Cranberries, Apples, Oranges, Lettuce, Grapefruit, Pineapples, Tangerines, Strawberries, Raspberries, Onions.
